High-level glossary for materials science workflows

Effective research data management depends on shared descriptive models and consistent terminology. Establishing a common language helps different scientific communities exchange, interpret and reuse data while making it easier to build collaboratively on existing resources.

The seminar presents the latest version of a high-level glossary jointly developed by Helmholtz JL-MDMC, NFFA-Europe Pilot and NFDI-MatWerk. Conceived as a foundation for describing nanoscience and materials science workflows, the glossary covers the lifecycle and provenance of research entities and data—from material fabrication and experimental studies to scientific publications, archiving and subsequent reuse.

A practical use case will demonstrate how a terminology service can transform glossary terms into machine-actionable resources, supporting automated interpretation and interoperability across data systems.

Alongside the semantic framework, the seminar will examine a modular approach to metadata schema design. The aim is to encourage discussion among participating communities and contribute to a flexible, commonly agreed solution for describing materials science research data.
