Seminar with Giullame Gaisne, ESRF European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
The ESRF is the brightest source of X-rays in the world.
This status attracts a lot of interest and unlocks many possibilities for research in a lot of fields but all this research implies to deal with a huge amount of data.
In 2015, the ESRF endorsed a data policy to improve the way data is managed with the goal of having open data following the FAIR principles. Since then, ~29PB of data has been created with ~1 billion files. Such an amount of data has to be managed properly in order to extract as much science as possible, in an automated way.
The implementation of this data policy requires new tools, infrastructures, cultural change and manpower, it implies choosing some technologies and building around these, and includes lots of different actors in the loop: developers, scientists, users, the public.
The FAIR journey is a long path but with the promise to not only connect data to the rest of the world, but also create links between teams, strengthen the core of facilities or laboratories and make research shine brighter.
This presentation will outline the choices made and their implementations within the ESRF infrastructure to walk on the path towards FAIR data.
