Defense Year: 2024-2025

This thesis, titled "FAIR by Design Upgrade for the UNIMI NFFA-DI Experimental Offer", authored by Simone Contu, presents a comprehensive effort to implement FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles within the MIMAG Laboratory at the University of Milan. Focused on Raman spectroscopy, the work details the development of a FAIR-compliant data pipeline, converting raw instrument outputs (.csv, .txt, and .spe) into the standardized NeXus format using custom Python scripts. The author outlines the challenges of harmonizing legacy and analog instruments with modern digital systems, integrating metadata via structured formats, and utilizing tools like eLabFTW and the NOMAD repository for reproducibility and open access. This FAIRification initiative is embedded within the broader goals of the NFFA-DI and PRP@CERIC projects, aligning the lab's workflows with European Open Science and EOSC frameworks. The project sets a precedent for scalable FAIR data management in experimental condensed matter physics and supports future extensions to additional instrumentation within the laboratory.
